Post subject: Too many bright ideas!

First time I have posted here so here goes.
I keep comming up with these bright ideas to just slightly tweek the game slightly without having to do too much hard work. I'm not suggesting anything silly like "can we have these new power-ups" because I am not trying to make the game more complicated to use, just simply more pleasing on the eye and a little more fun.
Here is one such suggestion. Could it be possible that each player has it's own character. What I mean by this is at the moment each player is defined by the character/grpahics set on 'your' hard drive. So while one person is using the Simpsons set, another could be using the classic Dynablaster set. My suggestion is that the character 'you' use or make is seen by everyone else.
Confused? Imagine that my character is a fish! Each time I join a channel, the game recognises that it's me and then uses that fish character. This then means that everyone can run around trying to kill this fish which they know is me. This saves having to look at the list to see who's alive or dead, and you also know who you are trying to kill. It also saves the hassle of jumping on and off just to change the colour of your character.
Of course, if you don't set your character, the game could then use the defaults.
Does this sound silly? Does it sound like too much alteration to the game itself? I hope not, but it is a suggestion that would make the game a lot more funny! |

We like new ideas! Keep them coming
The only issue I see with your idea, which is good and we heard it somewhere else before , would be the amount of data that needs to be transferred to the other players! Imagine you are playing and 5 or 6 'new' players join the arena. Every player has to 'download' your players-style at least once... it could make the game unplayable (lag) every time one is log in.
I think that is why we didn't consider that enhancement. Gelb correct me if I'm wrong |

It would only require you to downloads the graphics for the character only. This 'image' isn't that big in size. The other option is to present a list of characters (enabling people to make hundreds of characters for fun) which can be downloaded from the website (like currently) or include them in the dynamite archive.
If lag is the issue then simply don't send the data during the game. All you would have to do is send the character used (a few bytes) and if that character is available on 'your' computer, the game uses it. Otherwise the defaults can be used.
Hope this sounds like a good idea. I didn't know it had been thought of before. |

I suggest:
take all independent existing characthers
and put them in their own file.
a dir called "characthers"
could be appropriate.
send them out each update.
make a txt list of the characters:
1.bart
2.cartman
3.Joar, the stupid.
...hundreds of more.
then create a string gadget
in the GUI of dynamite,
wich you can set a number in.
that number will use the set
gfx for your viewing and others.
OR:
just make it work like the
vault does now. |

Wow... how did I miss this game. I'm downloading and installing.
First of all, this sounds like a good idea. Or it could be done the way Unreal Tournament does it's skins: The server has skin packages installed. The clients install packages they want. When playing on the server with a modified skin that the server also has installed, everyone sees the changed character. If using a skin that's not loaded on the server, then everyone sees you as the default character. (and the same if they don't have skin packages installed)
This would make a good pack-in game for OS4. Maybe even get a few more people on the servers. |
